Brief: Supporting Small Businesses

Original submission

Insight

The Busara Center for Behavioral Economics (Busara) is an advisory and research organization focused on the evaluation and implementation of behavioral, economic, and social interventions in the Global South.

In the wake of the Covid-19 epidemic we propose to focus on the following core priorities:

Supporting small businesses/ service providers

Idea

Support small businesses: We will target both the demand side (small businesses) and supply side (service providers) in the following ways:

Small businesses

  • Create professional circles that encourage business owners to self identify (retail, agriculture, financial services, etc) and seek out supportive virtual communities through which businesses can exchange ideas and share practices on how to thrive in spite of the crisis

  • Empower business people to self evaluate and link them to appropriate service providers (e.g. courier services, suppliers with flexible terms, financial/insurance support, venture capital, etc) if/as needed

  • Enable interfaces for businesses to make/receive payments through the platform

Service providers

  • Whitelist service providers onto the platform

  • Provide virtual meeting rooms through which business owners can speak with service providers

In addition, we will also generate analytics to showcase improvements to business outcomes, targeted for specific state and non-state actors as indicated below:

Service providers

  • Unearth business segments and how to optimize outcomes in line with behavioral nudges deployed

Governments (local and national)

  • Share aggregated analysis on outcomes (e.g. number of businesses onboarded, number of active service providers, value of support received by businesses, influence of nudges on patient/provider behavior, etc)

Execution

Based on our capabilities and your core priorities, we propose to work with your team to design a digital ecosystem that on the:

● Front-end would allow end users to access and share pivotal information via innovative smartphone based applications and/or USSD short codes

● Back-end would enable state and non-state actors to provide inputs, run campaigns, customize nudges to influence end user behavior, run analyses and view aggregated data to support decision making and ultimately policy

Spare is an amazing example of Busara’s capabilities in terms of front and back-end design.
